Nelson Wong

Nelson Wong Cheong Lum started learning the oboe at the age of 18, and decided to pursue on becoming a professional oboist ever since. He obtained Diploma of Music from the Malaysia Institute of Arts (MIA, 2009), where he studied under Duncan Thorpe, Joost Flach, and Simon Emes (Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Oboe Sub-Principal, Co-Principal and Principal respectively). With his gifted talent, he was awarded a full scholarship from the Korea National University of Arts (KNUA) to further pursue his Master of Music degree in Oboe Performance under the guidance of Ingo Goritzki and Jong-Duk Kim from 2010-2013.

He currently serves as a principal oboist at the National Symphony Orchestra (MNSO) of Malaysia at Istana Budaya, in addition to maintaining a busy concert schedule and teaching private oboe lessons at several universities such as the UPM, UPSI, and UITM. Nelson is one of the founding members of Bachfest Malaysia, and have also performed with the East Malaysia Bach Cantata Singers and Orchestra, where he has performed numerous major works and sacred cantatas by J. S. Bach. He is frequently invited by Vietnam Symphony Orchestra as the guest oboe principal.
