Ling Li-Yen first started the violin at age 3, taught by her mother, Eveleen Ling who is a violist. From there, her love for music grew. She started the piano at age 7. Later on at age 12 she studied the cello with her aunt, Aileen Khoo. She took her ATCL in cello right before she went to Southwestern College in Kansas, USA where she graduated with a Bachelor degree majoring in piano and violin performance. During her college years, Dr. Eugenia Yao, a professor from Southwestern College gave Ling her debut as a guest soloist in her concert in Hong Kong. On top of that, Ling’s college choir had the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall, New York for a festive choir concert. In 2005, Ling graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance and returned to Malaysia in 2006. Right after she returned, she got her LLCM in cello before joining the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) where she was one of the founding members and subsequently was their principle violist for their third season onwards. After leaving MPYO, Ling has been playing with various orchestras and ensembles; among them includes the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), Kuala Lumpur Symphony Orchestra (KLSO), National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), Selangor Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and Penang Philharmonic Orchtestra (PPO). Ling has also worked with various artists such as Siti Nurhaliza, Jacqueline Victor, Jamal Abdilah and Francis Yip.
